The Adelaide Desalination Plant Project was constructed under a DCOM contract by a joint venture comprising of McConnell Dowell Constructors, Abigroup Contractors, ACCIONA Agua and United Utilities Australia.
The plant was constructed as part of the South Australian Government's Water Proofing Adelaide Strategy. The plant is capable of supplying 300 ML per day which in continuous operation is the equivalent of half of metropolitan Adelaide's annual water usage. The plant is powered by sustainable energy sources.
Maritime Constructions was engaged by Adelaide Aqua as the preferred supplier of ancillary marine services.
Some components of the project works were extremely weather dependant. Maritime Constructions maintained double crews working 24 hours a day 7 days per week to ensure maximum usage of all available windows of opportunity. This was essential to ensure the eventual the marine component of the desalination plant works were completed on time and on budget - the first time this has been achieved on a major desalination plant project in Australia.
